Nature: Vehicle Accident BLS

On Thursday morning, October 10th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident involving a school bus on Legion Road. It was reported that children were still on the bus.

Emergency response units included: Rescue 80 and Incident Command Unit from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-5 from the Long Neck facility as well as Sussex County Paramedics, the Delaware State Police, the Delaware State Fire Police, and the local emergency medical service provider.

Emergency response crew assignments included vehicle stabilization, where needed; patient stabilization and assessment with identification of student injuries; scene stabilization; debris clean up and fluid recovery measures; and traffic control assistance.  

It was identified that there was no occupant entrapment, just assistance needed in getting out of the vehicle and no injuries involving the students on the school bus. Additional personnel from the school district were present at the incident location as well.

It appears that the school bus was stopped and attempted to back up, not seeing the 4-door Nissan sedan behind the school bus. The school bus backed into the sedan.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.

BREAKING: Accident Involving School Bus Near Legion Post 28 in Oak Orchard

Paramedics and Indian River firefighters are on the scene of an accident between a school bus and another vehicle on Legion Road at Route 24 just before 7:50 this morning. Firefighters say there are children on the bus. It’s unknown if any or how many people are injured at this time. Drivers can expect delays on Route 24 near Legion Post 28.

School bus crashes near Oak Orchard

Rescue crews are on the scene of a crash near Oak Orchard involving a school bus, officials said.

The crash, which is being described as a “minor accident,” happened in the area of Legion Road and John J. Williams Highway (Del. 24) at about 7:50 a.m., said an official with the Sussex County fire board.

Delaware State police Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said there were no injuries.

The bus, contracted for the Indian River School District, had students on board at the time of the crash, an official said.

Officials were not able to say which school the bus was going to.
