Vehicle Accident Closes John J. Williams Highway...

On Friday afternoon, October 4th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a motor vehicle accident, reported serious, on John J. Williams Highway in the vicinity of Layton Davis Road. It was reported to be multiple vehicles, possible patient entrapment with one vehicle overturning multiple times.

Emergency response units included: Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Engine #80-5 from the Long Neck facility, the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit, the Sussex County Paramedics, and the local emergency medical provider.

Emergency response crew assignments included patient stabilization, vehicle stabilization with preparation for vehicle extrication, complete closure of the John J. Williams Highway in all directions, coordination of a landing zone as well as scene preservation.

Rescue 80 was initially assigned to assist with patient stabilization and prepare for vehicle extrication efforts. Engine #80-5 was assigned to assist with the vehicle extrication efforts. Additional rescue assist and emergency medical response units from the Millsboro (83) fire company.

It appears that green, 4-door Chevrolet Malibu was traveling eastbound on John J. Williams Highway and apparently struck a green Ford F150 pick up that was traveling westbound. The pick-up overturned and continued traveling west and came to rest in the eastbound lanes blocking traffic and causing a significant debris field. The Malibu continued eastbound striking a second vehicle, a maroon, Lincoln MKZ 4-door mid-sized sedan with both vehicles blocking the westbound travel lane and shoulder lane. The occupants of the truck and third vehicle did not require extrication measures; however, the driver of the Malibu did require extensive vehicle extrication efforts.

The aviation unit caused the nearby utility wires to bounce which snagged a passing tractor trailer causing another hazard on nearby Layton Davis Road.  Layton Davis Road remained closed

In addition, localized spot fires were reported in the area associated with the downed lines.

The Delaware State Fire Police were required to coordinate traffic control measures for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware State Police are investigating the incident.
