Vehicle Collision Closes John J. Williams Highway - Oak Orchard

On Wednesday morning, September 25th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a serious vehicle accident on John J. Williams Highway in the vicinity of the American Legion Post. It was reported to be possible occupant entrapment with serios injuries in one vehicle.

Emergency response units included: Rescue 80 and Utility 80-08 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as Engine #80-5 from the Long Neck facility, the Sussex County Paramedics, the Millsboro Fire Company Hazardous Materials Unit, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control (DNREC) Officer, and the Delaware State Police.

Emergency response assignments included patient stabilization, where needed; vehicle stabilization; scene preservation and traffic control; preparation of vehicle extrication; evaluation and preparation for hazardous material recovery; and overall scene mitigation.

It appears that a large 12-wheeled truck carrying caustic soda was traveling east on John J. Williams Highway and a Ford Utility Van was traveling west on John J. Williams Highway collided causing significant damage to both vehicles.

The van continued traveling westbound veering off the roadway into an open field. This vehicle encountered substantial vehicle damage causing the driver to become trapped inside. The truck continued traveling eastbound and executed a controlled stop on the shoulder of the roadway. This vehicle encountered structural damage to the rear axles and developed a diesel fuel leak.

Indian River’s Extrication Officer, Steven C. Deery, Jr., coordinated the extrication efforts in order to free the driver of the van who was later transported to nearby medical facilities by the local emergency medical services provider.

The Delaware State Police ordered this segment of the roadway closed for the duration of the incident which required establishment of detour operations.

The Millsboro Fire Company’s Hazardous Materials Units was requested to off-load the diesel fuel and evaluate the other container conditions. The DNREC Officer evaluated the situation and made appropriate decision to mitigate the truck’s cargo.

The Delaware Department of Transportation was requested to provide arrow board and traffic control assistance for the remainder of the incident. This section of roadway remained closed at the time of fire apparatus departure.

The Delaware State Police are investigating the incident.
