Nature: Vehicle Accident ALS

Location: Joann Drive, Mariners Cove

Address: 35200 - 35559 Joann Dr., Millsboro, DE 19966

On Thursday afternoon, July 25th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a personal injury vehicle incident on Joanne Drive in the Mariner’s Cove development off of Long Neck Road. It was reported to be an out of control vehicle backing into a pedestrian.

Emergency response units included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Engine #80-5 from the Long Neck facility, the Sussex County Paramedics, the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit and Ground Units, the Delaware State Fire Police, as well as the local emergency medical services provider.

It appears that a private contractor was attempting to back-up a white Ford Pick-up while be directed by another person. The belief is that the operator became confused and quickly accelerated the vehicle striking a parked Nissan Sentra, running over some decorative bushes and shrubbery, striking a neighboring residential structure, before running into a female person at the residential location.

Emergency response units were assigned to assist with patient stabilization, if needed; mitigate any safety or security concerns with the vehicles; and prepare for an aviation landing zone via Delaware State Police Trooper 2.

The Delaware State Fire Police were required to limit traffic flow via the development and assist with roadway closure pending the landing of the aircraft.

The injured person was flown for additional medical observation and treatment.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
