1 Pedestrian Dead, 1 in Critical Condition After Being Hit by SUV Following Fireworks In Dewey

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a pair of pedestrians near Dewey Beach.

Troopers say just after 9:30 Thursday night, following the fireworks show, 79-year-old Roy Love and his 75-year-old wife Helene of Rehoboth Beach were crossing from the concrete median across the southbound lanes of Route 1 south of Anchor Lane. At that time, 25-year-old Matthew O’Connor of Washington, D.C. was driving south in a Lincoln Navigator, and was preparing to turn off of Route 1 when Troopers say the Loves walked out into the left lane, and were hit by the Navigator. Roy Love was pronounced dead at Beebe Hospital, while Helene is listed in critical condition at Christiana Hospital.

O’Connor has been charged with DUI, and more charged may be pending after State Police complete their investigation.

An elderly man died after being struck by an SUV on Del. 1 near Dewey Beach on Thursday night and his wife is in critical condition, state police said this morning. The driver of the car was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

The accident happened about 9:30 p.m. south of Anchor Way, just south of the Dewey town limits, said Master Cpl. Gary E. Fournier.

Roy E. Love, 79, of Rehoboth Beach, was pronounced dead at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, where he was taken after the crash.

His wife, Helene L. Love, 75, was first taken to Beebe and then air-lifted to Christiana Hospital in Stanton, Fournier said.

He said they were struck by a 2005 Lincoln Aviator driven by Matthew T. O'Connor, 25, of Washington, D.C.

O’Conner was southbound, preparing to turn into a turn lane south of Anchor Way as the Loves were crossing from the raised concrete median to the west side of the highway when they both stepped out into the left lane and were struck by the Lincoln, Fournier said.

O’Conner was wearing a seat belt and not injured, Fournier said.

“More charges may be forthcoming upon the completion of the investigation,” he said.

One southbound lane on Del. 1 (Coastal Highway) was closed about two hours as police investigated.

“Troopers remind pedestrians to use caution and safety when walking on or near roadways. If you must cross a roadway utilize appropriate cross walks and make sure to look left, then right, then left again before proceeding. When walking near a roadway always make yourself visible to drivers by wearing bright/light colored clothing and reflective materials. Pedestrians that are walking at night must carry a flashlight for added safety,” Fournier said.

He said the Loves were not carrying a light and were not in a crosswalk.
