On Thursday morning, May 23rd, the Indian River (80), Rehoboth Beach (86), Bethany Beach (70), the United States Coast Guard – Indian River, and the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit (Trooper 2) were alerted for a watercraft in distress incident in the Rehoboth Bay off of Bay City.

It was reported that a vessel was approximately ½ mile off shore yelling for help for an unknown reason at the time of the incident dispatch. Indian River Emergency response units included: Utility 80-8 with 80 Marine 1, Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as Brush 80-0 with 80 Marine 2 and Engine 80-5 from the Long Neck facility with launching preparation being Massey’s Landing. The Bethany Beach response unit included 70 Marine 1 with launching preparation being at the Indian River Inlet. The Rehoboth Beach response unit included Marine 86 to their designated marina area for launch preparation.

The Delaware State Police Aviation Unit was airborne and traveled to the incident location identifying the distressed vessel and provided visual and actual coordinates for responding vessel as well as making contact with the vessel occupant.

The nature of the incident was identified a mechanical issue with the boat motor and DSP Trooper 2 hovered nearby until 80 Marine 2 arrived.

The vessel was stabilized and anchored while the mariner was transported to shore.

All units were able to return back to their designated quarters upon completion of the launch.
