Wright believes Sussex roots will bring success

SELBYVILLE — Indian River School Board member Leolga Wright believes her strong ties with the community is her key to success in the May 14 election.

The District 3 representative has lived in the area her entire life, even graduating from Sussex Central High School before spending more than 30 years with the Farm Service Agency. Her main experience in the school district comes from her experiences with her son, with whom she has participated in every level of education, from kindergarten through high school.

“People are familiar with me,” Wright said.

Wright was appointed to the board to complete the term of former representative Randall Hughes after he vacated the seat, which has been met with criticism by Wright’s challenger, Paulette Rappa. Rappa emphasized the importance of an election, even in the case of a vacant seat.

“I agree with that, but that’s not the way the law works,” Wright said. “We can’t just hold a special election whenever someone resigns.”

Since her appointment, Wright has voiced her support for the Indian River School District referendum, which called for more teachers and in particular, an all-day kindergarten. According to Wright, until the referendum, Indian River had been the only school district in Delaware that did not have all-day kindergarten.

Wright has already begun her campaign, handing out signs and meeting with churches and organizations. She also stresses the difference between this and the typical political election by saying she intends to simply be herself during the process.

“This is not politics,” Wright said. “I’m not going to be the person to slander someone, I’m just not that kind of person.”

During the past year in the District 3 seat, Wright says she likes to employ her strengths as a listener yet is not afraid to make a decision when the time calls for it.

“I like to vote for what is right in my heart,” she said. “I want to be that go-to person if someone, mainly children, feel like something isn’t right; whether it’s bullying or if anyone just doesn’t feel comfortable.”

Wright has nothing but praise for the district, and uses her son, Tyler, as an example of the schools’ success. “

Tyler was actually the only student in the Indian River district to have perfect attendance from kindergarten all the way up to senior year,” Wright said. “It says a lot about the schools when you have a child that really wants to go to school.”
