Nature: Vehicle Accident ALS – Level 1 Mass Casualty Incident (MCI)

On Friday afternoon, January 18th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company, was alerted for a serious motor vehicle accident on Long Neck Road north of Church Street. It was reported to be four vehicles and six persons with possible entrapment in two vehicles.

The Sussex County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) immediately updated this incident to a Level 1 Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) which diverted additional paramedic units and ambulance resources from Millsboro Fire Company (Station #83) and Lewes Fire Department (Station #82) to the incident location.

Initial incident reports via nearby Probation and Parole Officers confirmed the nature and location of the incident as well as occupant entrapment and conveyed incident information to emergency responders. The Sussex County Paramedic Units also provided incident confirmation to other emergency response units.

Indian River 's Incident Command Officer, Ryan Mock requested the complete closure of Long Neck Road for the duration of the incident as well as requested responding emergency response apparatus to perform vehicle stabilization, prepare for vehicle extrication, assist with patient assessment and stabilization as needed as prioritize the incident response services at the scene.

Emergency response crew from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Engines #80-5 and #80-3 from the Long Neck facility, Chief 80-15; and the Delaware State Fire Police. Engine #80-5 was ordered to initiate vehicle stabilization, assist with patient stabilization, and commence with extricate when prepared. Rescue 80 was ordered to assist with stabilization and extrication.

As other emergency response units arrived, specific assignments include landing zone assistance, scene and incident preservation, traffic control assistance, apparatus staging, and incident and debris clean up. In total, three persons required vehicle extrication assistance, one vehicle occupant was flown to nearby medical facilities and the remaining patients were transported via ground units.

It appears that a silver Nissan X-Terra was traveling north on Long Neck Road and initially collided with the southbound Grey Chevrolet HHR causing the vehicles to spin. The X-Terra continued northbound striking a second southbound silver Toyota 4-Runner and then causing a third southbound silver Chevrolet Silverado to the X-Terra. The 4-Runner spun and went into the west side shoulder of Long Neck Road while all other vehicles came to rest in the traffic lanes of Long Neck Road.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.

Emergency Crews on Scene of Crash on Long Neck Road

Indian River and Millsboro emergency crews were called for a crash on Long Neck Road in the area of Pot Nets Road around 3:15.  There are reports of multiple injuries and the state police helicopter has also been called to fly one patient to an area hospital. If you're traveling in that area be prepared to slow or detour around the scene.  WGMD will have more information as it becomes available.
