Nature: Water Rescue Priority 1

Address: 1 - 99 Van Dyke Ave Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971

On Thursday, July 26th, the Indian River (80), Rehoboth Beach (86), and Bethany Beach (70) volunteer fire companies as well as the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit (Trooper 2), the Delaware Department of Natural Resources Environmental Control – Marine Police Division; and the United States Coast Guard were alerted for a water rescue priority near Van Dyke Street in Dewey Beach.

Emergency response units included Indian River’s Marine Units 80 Marine 1 and 80 Marine 2; Indian River’s Incident Command, and Engine #80-5 as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. All of Indian River’s units were to prepare for launching at Massey’s Landing with specific assignments to travel to Dewey via waterway and coordinate grid patterns searches off of Van Dyke Street.

The other responding entities were provided specific assignments which included:

• Indian River’s 80 Marine 2 was assigned to coordinate a search pattern in the Rehoboth Bay;

• Indian River’s 80 Marine 1 was assigned to coordinate a search pattern in the Rehoboth Bay Marina;

• Bethany Beach 70 Marine Unit was assigned to coordinate a search pattern from Indian River Inlet to Dewey Beach;

• Rehoboth Beach was coordinating the Incident Command tasks, duties and assignments, as well as search patterns with their vessel; • DNREC – Marine Police were assisting with efforts;

• Delaware State Police Aviation Unit (Trooper 2) was down due to weather forecasts.

It was reported that we were searching for a 50 year male subject that intentionally walked into the water dressed in shorts and has not returned. Their reported path of travel was off of Van Dyke Street and his vehicle was located in the parking lot.

All units were assigned to coordinate tasks, duties, and actions via radio communications channel Sussex Mutual Aid 2 and it was confirmed that the subject would potentially be combative, if approached, and may attempt to hide from vessels.

It was approximately 12:30 p.m.; the subject was spotted approximately 30 feet offshore walking inland. After positive confirmation, all search vessels and parties were released to return to their respective stations.

All units were returned while the Delaware Department of Natural Resources Environmental Control Marine Police and possibly Dewey Beach coordinated closure for the incident.

All mariners were returned safe and unharmed.
