Story
Saturday December, 24 2011 Nature: Structure Fire Address: 27253 Barkantine Dr., River Village, Millsboro, DE 19966 On Saturday, December 24th, Indian River, Millsboro and Lewes fire companies were alerted for a structure fire on Barkantine Drive in the River Village development off of Oak Orchard Road. It was reported to be a possible heater file with everyone being evacuated out of the structure. The incident command responsibilities were coordinated by Chief Steven Deery who responded directly to the incident. Initial evaluations indicated an interior smoke filled condition with extensive damage to the residential heating system and closet area. Chief Deery downgraded the incident response to Indian River units and one Millsboro unit responding to the scene and a Lewes unit was redirected to provide stand-by coverage at our Long Neck facility. The emergency response crews were assigned to coordinate positive pressure ventilation and to conduct an interior evaluation of the structure as well as an exterior evaluation of the crawl space. Efforts to disconnect the fuel to the heating systems were coordinated as well as notification to the Office of the State Fire Marshal and American Red Cross. It was determined that approximately 9 adults and 6 children resided at the residential location.
