Nature: Structure Fire with Entrapment

Location: 19889 Sea Air Ave. Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971

On Tuesday, June 4, 2019, the Indian River (80) and Lewes (82) fire departments were alerted to assist Rehoboth Beach (86) with a working structure fire and reports of occupant trapped.  Numerous reports of heavy fire and smoke were received to the Emergency Operations Center.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-3 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

Emergency response crews provided assistance as needed from the Rehoboth Beach Operations Officer which included but limited to providing stand-by cover up assignments from the scene for any additional emergency within the Rehoboth Beach Fire District.

There were injuries associated with the incident.

The Delaware State Fire Police provided traffic control and scene preservation measures for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal is investigating.

Neighbors rush to the rescue in Sea Air fire

Sea Air resident Thomas Davis looked out his front door about noon, June 4, and saw flames in the neighbor’s small window that faces his home.

He called 911 while getting his daughter out the back door. His trash cans and some siding melted. He said the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company response time was amazing. “By the time I got over there, everyone was out. I’m grateful that the little boy who lives there was not home today,” Davis said.

Gina Sautter doesn’t remember getting out of her chair, but she heard her neighbor, Noemi Marrero, screaming “Fire” and ran to the back door of the burning mobile home and attempted to open it. She burned her hand on the knob. “I kept screaming ‘where is the little boy?’ and finally they said he wasn’t home today. But I was running on pure adrenaline.”

Marrero said she saw red flames in the windows. She and her husband Jose were worried about propane tanks and alerted all the neighbors. Luckily for the occupants of the burning home, landscapers who were cutting grass jumped in and made sure everyone was out of the house.

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- - The Delaware State Fire Marshal's office is investigating a fire that destroyed a trailer home in Rehoboth Beach's Sea Air Village on Tuesday.

 Crews from Rehoboth Beach, Lewes, and Indian River arrived at 19889 Sea Air Ave at approximately 12:00 PM.  It took nearly 30 minutes to get the fire under control.  Two people were hospitalized due to the fire, a 30 year old man for smoke inhalation and an elderly woman for observation. 

 "It was burning pretty good when we got here," Rehoboth Beach Fire Company Chief Chuck Snyder said.  "The flames were pretty much in front of the trailer extending about 15 to 20 feet in the air." 

 The siding of the neighboring home belonging to Tammy LaDuca became warped due to the intense heat from the fire.

 "I am just glad everyone got out next door," LaDuca said. "The siding can be fixed, lives can't."

 Assistant State Fire Marshal Mike Chionchio estimates $50,000 in damage as a result of the fire.
