Nature: Structure Fire

Location: Harmons Body Shop
Address:  30616 Gull Point Rd Millsboro, DE 19966

On Thursday, February 7, 2019, the Indian River (80), Millsboro (83), and Georgetown (77) fire companies were alerted for a working commercial structure fire on Gull Point Road. The incident was reported to be at Harmon’s Body Shop and may have involved at least one worker being injured as a result of the fire.  Additional emergency response entities included the Sussex County Paramedics and the local emergency medical service provider.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 and Ladder 80 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as Engines #80-3 and #80-1 from the Long Neck facility.  The Delaware State Fire Police also responded to the incident.

Emergency response crew assignments included initial interior structural access and fire suppression measures while heavy black smoke was starting to be emitted from the garage door areas.  Initial crews from Tanker 80 commenced with a fire suppression line and entered the commercial structure through the side door.  The fire was suppressed and extinguished while other crews installed ground ladders and activated ventilation measures.  Emergency medical response personnel attended to the worker that was injured during the incident.  Other responding companies were requested to assist with ventilation, manpower resources, extensions into other areas as well as overhaul.

It appears that body repair procedures and welding was being performed on a vehicle inside the garage when the fire commenced within the vehicle.

The Delaware State Police responded to the incident as a result of the initial emergency call from the location.

The Delaware State Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control for the duration of the incident closing Gull Point Road between John J. Williams Highway and Rosedale Road.

One worker from the facility was transported to medical facilities for burns associated with the incident.
