Indian River Receives AFG Grant Award for Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus and Equipment

The Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) primary objective is to enhance the safety of the public and firefighters with respect to fire-related hazards by providing direct financial assistance to eligible fire departments, nonaffiliated Emergency Medical Services organizations, and State Fire Training Academies. This funding is for critically needed resources to equip and train emergency personnel to recognized standards, enhance operations efficiencies, foster interoperability, and support community resilience.

Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was awarded $209,419 under this initiative to replace the firefighter self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and other equipment.

This grant award will target complete replacement of its self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).  A SCBA unit is sometimes referred to as a compressed air breathing apparatus (CABA), or simply breathing apparatus (BA), and is a device worn by rescue workers, firefighters, and others to provide breathable air during an immediately dangerous to life or health atmosphere.

This grant will allow Indian River to update all of its self contained breathing apparatus in apparatus and provide for much greater life expectancy than our current SCBA devices.

This grant award documentation was created with the coordination of a professional grant writing firm and our internal grant coordinator.
