Nature: Structure Fire

On Thursday evening, November 9, 2018, the Indian River (80), Lewes (82), Millsboro (83), Milton (85), Dagsboro (73), Georgetown (77), and Rehoboth Beach (86) were alerted to assist with a multi-residential commercial apartment complex fire that was currently under construction.  It was reported that the four story structure was fully involved at the time of the reporting calls.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Ladder 80, Rescue 80, Utility 80-8, and Utility 80-11 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engines #80-1, #80-3 and Brush 80-00 from the Long Neck facility.  Additional emergency alerts notified the Sussex County Paramedics, the local emergency medical services provider, the Sussex County Foam Trailer as well the Delaware State Fire Police and the Delaware State Fire Marshall.

Emergency response crew assignments included incident size up and establishment of a command structure for water supply, operations, and overall incident mitigation tactics.  Additional ladder trucks were requested for this emergency incident.

Based upon the incident size up and fast-moving nature, this incident was an exterior attic only with ladder/tower operations as well as numerous master streams from apparatus and portable monitor operations be established.  The apartment building was still under construction and the sprinkler system had not be active.  

Additionally, representatives from Tidewater Utilities were requested because of the water pressure issues.

Emergency response crews worked well into the evening hours to suppress the fire at this location. 

The Delaware State Fire Police were required to close numerous roads and roadway access to the commercial complex because of the large diameter hose stretching across the area from the various water supply locations.

The Delaware State Fire Marshall is investigating.

There was one firefighter that needed additional observation at the nearby medical facility.
