Milton Fire Company Assistant Chief Matt Dotterer said the fire started in a detached garage in the 20500 block of Forest Road at 1:14 p.m. A Lewes firefighter was the first to respond, Dotterer said, but the blaze quickly spread. "The wind really hindered us," Dotterer said. "It went up and caught the leaves and grass. It also spread to the neighbor's yard," Dotterer said. A car and a boat in the neighbor's yard were destroyed. The fire spread to a wooded area. Fire crews from companies in Ellendale, Georgetown, Indian River, Rehoboth Beach and Slaughter Beach assisted in battling the blaze. It was ruled under control in about an hour and a half, Dotterer said. The dog that died was chained to the garage that caught fire. No other injuries were reported. Dotterer said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
