Joseph E. Ironside, 81, was driving a 2008 Chevrolet northbound on Legion Road in Millsboro. Police say at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 26, he failed to remain stopped at the stop sign where Legion Road meets Route 24. Ironside turned into the path of a 1995 Oldsmobile traveling east on Route 24. John S. North, 33, of Greenwood, who was driving the Oldsmobile, and an unidentified male passenger were flown in separate helicopters to Christiana Hospital Trauma Center, where they remain in critical condition. Ironside died at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. Two unidentified women were also riding in North’s car. They were treated at Beebe Medical Center for injuries that were not life-threatening. State Police Director of Public Information Paul Shavack said at least one of the women has been released. Shavack said police do not know why Ironside’s car did not remain stopped at the T-intersection. He said the evening was dry and clear, and there were no witnesses. Police are waiting for a toxicology report to determine whether alcohol was involved in the crash, Shavack said. Police expect to receive the report in 10 to 14 days. The collision was considered a Level One mass casualty. Indian River Volunteer Fire Company Duty Officer Hayden Klingler said that indicates multiple patients needed treatment at the scene. He said four ambulances, two paramedic units and a helicopter are typically sent to the scene during this type of incident. Klingler coordinated resources Friday evening, including treating patients, controlling traffic and securing the scene. He said both drivers were trapped in their cars when he arrived. It took 5 to 7 minutes to extricate Ironside from his white Chevrolet; North’s rescue was more difficult because he was pinned under the dashboard so the driver’s side door had to be cut off, Klingler said. As the Delaware State Police Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate, police ask anyone with information about the crash to contact Cpl. Nicole Oldham of the Reconstruction Unit at 302-644-5020, Ext.119. A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m., Friday, Dec. 3, at American Legion Post 28, 31768 Legion Road, Millsboro, followed by interment with military honors at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.
