Story
Friday November, 19 2010 @ 02:30:28 Nature: Structure Fire Address: 28243 Gravel Hill Rd Millsboro, DE 19966 At approximately 2:30 a.m. on Friday morning, November 19th, the Indian River, Dagsboro and Gumboro fire companies were alerted to assist Millsboro Fire Company with a working structure on Gravel Hill Road just north of John J. Williams Highway. It was reported to be a working structure with exposures and unknown location of the residents. Upon arrival of Millsboro Fire Company, it was identified to have a residential structure, attached garage and nearby vessel fully involved from the rear of the residences. Fire was clearly visible through the evening sky. Engines #83-4 and #83-2 quickly activated multiple fire suppression 1¾” attack lines as well as established water supply operations. Engine #80-1 and #80-3 were assigned to assist Millsboro’s crew with initial entry into the residential structure as well as addressing the rear of the residential structure with two additional 1¾” fire suppression attack lines. Immediate attention was addressed to ladder the structure and cut ventilation wholes in the roofing of the structure which allow heat and fire to escape from the interior of the structure. Initial access to the interior found heavy fire conditions with fire in the basement and attic areas. These access efforts were hampered by the storage of residential belongings in the attic as well as knee walls, etc. The garage area and back portion of the residential structure were significantly destroyed by this time. The vessel nearby was fully involved and substantially destroyed as well. Tank trucks from Millsboro, Indian River and Dagsboro were utilized for water supply and rescue units from Millsboro and Indian River were used for lighting, electricity and breathing apparatus refilling. The Delaware State Fire Police provided traffic control assistance for motorist along Gravel Hill Road and the detoured routes for the duration of the incident. Emergency response units remained on scene until approximately 5:45 a.m. The Lewes and Milton fire companies provided stand-by coverage for the fire district of the Indian River. The Delaware State Fire Marshal is investigating the incident. There were no reported civilian or firefighter injuries.
