October 3rd thru 8th, 2010 Fire Prevention Week @ Long Neck Elementary School Address: School Lane, Millsboro, DE 19966 Indian River Volunteer Fire Company recognized and celebrated National Fire Prevention Week by hosting a week of educational and recreational fire prevention activities at the Long Neck Elementary School. During the week of October 3rd thru 8th, 2010, the Fire Prevention Committee coordinated by the volunteers of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company provided valuable fire prevention instructional and recreational activities which included grade appropriate curriculum activities: Kindergarten students were introduced to various firefighter gear and technology and participated in a “Get to know your local firemen” as well as identified and discussed things that could burn inside a house and what a smoke detectors looks and sounds like. First Grade students were introduced to various firefighter gear and technology and identified the “dangers of matches, lighters and other smoking materials. Second Grade students were introduced to various firefighter gear and technology and identified the “importance of an escape plan, safe meeting place outside the residence and other safety measures.” The Ladies Auxiliary of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company provided a lunch for these children. Third Grade students were introduced to various firefighter gear and technology and identified the “fire hazards in a residential structure.” Fourth Grade students were introduced to various firefighter gear and technology and participated in an educational dialogue as to what to do if your clothes were to catch fire. Fifth Grade students were introduced to the firefighter gear and technology and participated in an educational dialogue as to enhancing fire safety awareness in the kitchen. The cap stone activity for this age group included a field trip the Delaware State Fire School for planned educational and recreational activities. The Ladies Auxiliary of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company provided a lunch for these children. The Board of Directors, Officers and members of the Indian River Vol. Fire Co. hereby acknowledge and express our gratitude to the administrative and instructional staff members at the Long Neck Elementary school for their hospitality and patronage during these activities. Identified herewith are a few photographs and take –away (cap stones) of the week long activities. • A cap stone activity for these children included a fire truck ride on our Classic 1969 Mack Engine Pumper as well as apparatus tours of other equipment; • Another cap stone activity for this age group included a field trip to the fire station in Oak Orchard where an individualized tour of the apparatus and facility were provided; • An additional cap stone activity included a mini fire muster and other recreational activities; and • Final cap stone activity for this age group included a tour of the fire safety house during a manufactured smoke filled environment; as well as a simulated 911 call to the Emergency Operations Center.
