Friday January, 8 2010 @ 20:22:44 Nature: Traffic/Transportation Acdnt ALS Address: 31423 River Rd Millsboro, DE 19966 On Friday evening, January 8th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a personal injury vehicle accident in the vicinity of 31423 River Road (between the Riverside Inn and the Indian River Yacht Club) on the sharp curves. It was reported as a vehicle in the ditch. Duty Officer Eric Ruckle responded directly to the incident via the Incident Command Unit and identified that a black Chevrolet HHR was traveling west on River Road after the Riverside Inn and departed from the roadway surface for an unknown reason. The vehicle struck a mailbox and nose-dived into a ditch. Duty Officer Ruckle requested that River Road be closed for the duration of the incident. Emergency response personnel via Rescue 80 was unable to gain attention of the vehicle’s operator and were required to break the window to gain access to the patient and interior of the vehicle. Response personnel from Engine #80-5 were assigned to assist with vehicle stabilization (cribbing) while the patient was removed from the vehicle. Duty Officer Ruckle requested that vehicle stabilization, patient stabilization and extrication become paramount due to the weather condition with temperatures in the mid 20’s. The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated the roadway closure measures while the Delaware State Police conducted the incident investigation.
