Story
Sunday December, 27 2009 @ 23:29:27 Nature: Structure Fire Address: 30656 Gull Point Rd Millsboro, DE 19966 Late Sunday evening, the Indian River, Millsboro and Lewes volunteer fire companies were alerted for a structural fire on Gull Point Road. Chief Steven C. Deery, Jr. was operating as the Incident Commander for the duration of this incident. Deputy Chief Brian P. Hubbs responded to the incident and apprised Chief Deery of the situation prior to his arrival. It was responded that a heavy smoke and fire condition existed. Chief Deery requested Engine #80-1, the first due engine, to activate the trash line to knock down the fire and to initiate procedures to protect any exposure concerns. It was determined that a single car garage was fully involved with fire causing significant smoke and other hazardous situations. The garage was occupied with two (2) motorcycles, a generator and other commodities. Emergency response personnel were assigned to assist with fire extinguishment measures, ventilation, overhaul and evaluation of the overall situation. First Assistant Chief Eric Ruckle quickly made an evaluation of the interior residential structure to find malfunctioning kerosene heaters being fully operational inside the residential structure. The responding personnel from Lewes Fire Department were downgraded to one engine response and to provide stand-by coverage at Indian River’s fire station. The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the situation. There were no injuries associated with the structure fire; however, the garage and contents were completely destroyed.
