Nature: Traffic/Transportation Acdnt ALS
Address: John J Williams Hwy & Hollymount Road, Lewes, DE 19958
On mid-afternoon Sunday, May 31st, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a personal injury vehicle collision involving multiple vehicles and potential occupant ejections and numerous entrapments as reported to the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center. The incident location was John J. Williams Highway near the intersection of Hollymount Road just west of Burton’s Pond.
This incident was classified as a Level 1 Mass Casualty Incident which is defined as having five (5) or less personal injuries and requiring multiple emergency response entities which include multiple paramedic units from the Sussex County Emergency Medical Services (EMS); multiple EMS Basic Life Support (BLS) Units which were ambulances from Millsboro Volunteer Fire Company, Milton Volunteer Fire Company, Lewes Volunteer Fire Company, Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company and Mid Sussex Rescue Squad; as well as multiple aviation units which included but not limited to the Trooper 2 from the Delaware State Police and Life Net Medivac.
Initial reports for the responding emergency response units identified a three vehicle collision, with potential occupant ejections times three; and possibly two occupant entrapments within their motor vehicles.
It appears that a maroon Ford Taurus was traveling westbound on John J. Williams Highway; a maroon GMC conversion van was traveling east on John J. Williams Highway; and a silver Plymouth mini-van was traveling south on Hollymount Road. It appears that the point of impact for the vehicles was in the middle of the intersection with the Ford Taurus striking the Dodge mini-van. The Ford Taurus careened off the roadway into an adjacent field while the Plymouth mini-van spun and was struck by the GMC conversion van.
The Ford Taurus sustained significant front end and right passenger side damage while the Plymouth min-van sustained substantial front end and left driver side damage. The Ford Taurus required vehicle extrication measures to be implemented.
The Incident Command responsibilities were assigned to Jason Faulkner riding as the apparatus response officer on the first arriving unit. The next due emergency response units were assigned to coordinate the following duties and responsibilities which included but not limited to: vehicle stabilization; patient triage, assessment, stabilization and packaging preparation for transport to nearby medical facilities; traffic control and detour assignments; vehicle extrication measures; implementation of procedures for aviation loading zones and incident rehabilitation for emergency response personnel.
This incident required two vehicle occupants to be flown to Christiana Hospital in New Castle County via the aforementioned aviation units. The emergency response ground units provided transportation to the Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Both roadways (John J. Williams Highway and Hollymount Road) were closed for the duration of the incident which required the Delaware State Fire Police to coordinate traffic detours and await specialized sign board units from the Delaware Department of Transportation (DELDOT).
The incident is under investigation by the Delaware State Police which requested the Fatal Accident and Reconstruction Unit to be alerted for an additional evaluation.
