Story
At approximately 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, March 20, 2008, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a serious vehicle collision at the intersection of John J. Williams Highway and Gull Point Road. Upon arrival of a local emergency medical service (EMS) provider responding in his personal vehicle, the incident was upgraded to a Level 1 Mass Casualty Incident (MCI). It was reported that three vehicles were involved in the collision that sent one of the vehicle’s occupants to Christiana Hospital via LifeNet aviation unit and another vehicle’s occupant to Peninsula Regional Medical Center via the Delaware State Police Trooper 2 aviation unit. An additional three occupants were transported via local ambulances to a nearby medical facility. One occupant required extrication from their vehicle. John J. Williams Highway was closed for an extended period of time to permit removal of excessive vehicle debris and to permit the Delaware Department of Transportation to evaluate and inspect the roadway surface due to the vehicle fluids on the roadway. Ambulances that assisted with the incident included by not limited to the local EMS provider, Lewes Fire Department, Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company, and Dagsboro Fire Company. This incident is under investigation by the Delaware State Police. The Delaware Department of Transportation assisted with the closure and cleanup of the roadway.
