Nature: Water Rescue Priority 1
Location: Herring Creek
24368-24497 Sisters Lane Millsboro, DE 19966
On Saturday morning, December 16th, the Indian River (80), Bethany Beach (70), and Rehoboth Breach (86) were alerted for a water rescue incident on Herring Creek. Additional resources included the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit (Trooper 2), Sussex County Paramedics, local EMS provider and the United State Coast Guard – Indian River Squadron. It was reported that a duck hunter in a 10’ vessel capsized and one person in the water.
Emergency response units from Indian River, Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach responded to their designated launch points pending further information and assignments. The United States Coast Guard (USCG) was concerned that their vessel would not access the incident because of extremely low tidal conditions and requested assistance from the local fire companies.
Upon arrival of the USCG, they reported the conditions as reported and were able to access the mariner and vessel. The vessel operator was transported to awaiting EMS units for additional evaluation. The Delaware State Police Aviation Unit provided visual support until the situation was declared under control.
All responding units were cleared and returned to their respective stations.
