Indian River Responds to Pedestrian Fatality - Oak Orchard Road @ Nelsa Lane

On Friday evening at approximately 8:56 p.m., the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a reported vehicle accident on Oak Orchard Road (State Route #5) near the entrance to "The Meadows" development involving a pedestrian. It was reported that a female pedestrian was walking south on the shoulder of the roadway and attempted to crossover onto Nelsa Lane. The pedestrian stepped into the path of a southbound vehicle. This vehicle struck the pedestrian throwing her into the northbound traffic lane causing another vehicle to hit the pedestrian as well. Pursuant to the information via Office of the Highway Safety, this would be the 24th pedestrian fatality during Calendar Year 2006 as of November 20, 2006. It was reported that seven pedestrian fatalities were encountered in Calendar Year 2005 and is the highest pedestrian fatalities since 1996 in Delaware. Portions of Oak Orchard Road were closed for approximately 2.5 hours for the investigation to be completed. The incident was under the command of First Assistant Ryan Mock. The Delaware State Police are continuing their investigation of the accident.
