On Thursday, October 12, 2006, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a reported tractor trailer fire. Upon arrival of Chief Steven Deery it was determined that a mattress became lodged underneath the truck and was on fire. Bystanders utilized a dry chemical fire extinguisher to contain the fire until firefighters could arrive on scene. Route 24 was closed for a short time to allow firefighters to clear the roadway.
