Story
At 6:05 PM on Sunday, July 24, we were dispatched to a report of a working house fire on Joann Drive, John Burton Manor. Station 83, Millsboro, was dispatched for a full assist. We arrived to find a residence at 218 Joann Drive well involved with smoke and heavy flames showing from the south end of the building. No one was home at the time but a dog was inside the residence. Fire Police Officer Dave Blumenthal, who had been nearby at the Shorts Marine Family Picnic, was one of the first to arrive. With the help of two other responders, Dave broke a window, reached in, and pulled the dog to safety. Station 82, Lewes, was dispatched to cover Indian River Station 2. They were quickly upgraded to a full assist at the scene due to the quickly advancing fire and the high heat and humidity. Station 86, Rehoboth Beach, covered Station 2. The fire is being investigated by Deputy Fire Marshal John Galaska of the State Fire Marshals Office. Twenty-six Indian River firefighters were in service for three hours and 1 minute on this call.
