Story
At 6:03 AM on Wednesday, July 20, we were dispatched to 32091 Oak Orchard Road as a single company response for a possible electrical fire. Fire Police Officer Jim Becker was first on the scene and reported smoke showing. First Assistant Chief Brian Hubbs arrived on location next, confirmed smoke showing, and requested a working fire dispatch. Station 83, Millsboro, was dispatched to assist at the scene. The residents noticed circuit breakers tripping earlier but could not locate the source of the problem. When they woke up in the morning, they smelled smoke and called in the alarm. An electrical fire in the crawl space over a second floor bathroom was quickly knocked down. Although damage was confined to the bathroom area, utilities to the residence had to be disconnected. A Thermal imaging Camera was used to check for heat in the wall and roof areas. Two smoke detectors were installed on the first floor but they did not activate. Two new smoke detectors were given to the residents to be installed before they return to the house. Twenty-four Indian River firefighters, under the direction of First Assistant Chief Brian Hubbs, were in service for one hour and thirty-seven minutes for this call. Chief Steve Hawkins was Operations Officer.
